The word gown is derived from the ancient word for garments worn by men and women of religious orders. Until recent times children have worn what adults wore, adjusted for size of course. In centuries past, when life spans were much shorter, children began their training as adults at a much earlier age. And they were dressed accordingly. Only wealthy families had garments made only for one occasion, such as a Christening gown. And they were handed down as heirlooms from generation to generation.
